What is the « Virechana » detox?

From the point of view of ayurvedic medicine, diseases result from the imbalance of the humoral forces (Doshas) of Vata (Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapa (Earth). This imbalance is produced by the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body. Our health therefore depends on our natural ability to eliminate these toxins, an ability that can be disrupted by poor lifestyle habits, poor diet, stress or simply age. Ayurvedic medicine aims to restore this balance, and this concerns both the body and the mind because the accumulation of toxins can result as much from the poor digestion of food as from the poor digestion of our experiences and emotions.

Therefore our health depends on our natural ability to eliminate toxins. There are all kinds of approaches in Ayurveda to help the body get rid of toxins in depth. The one we offer is a light version of « Virechana » (purge), suitable for everybody and non-invasive. The cure lasts eight days and includes a fast (or a light diet, as desired) followed by a purge.

The preparatory phase (Purvakarma) consists of draining toxins present in the cells towards the digestive system in order to evacuate them through the anus. The first four days, we ingest in the morning on an empty stomach a preparation based on Ghee with medicinal herbs. The herbs stimulate the fire of digestion (Agni) and liquefy toxic metabolites. Ghee has the property to penetrate deep into the tissues and absorb these toxins.

The fifth day is a day without treatment. On the sixth and seventh days, you receive a therapeutic massage (Abhyanga) using sesame oil and medicinal plants to drain toxins to the intestines. The massage is followed by sweating (Swedana).

On the eighth day, the body is ready. You ingest a purgative potion and spend the morning in the toilets. It is a gentle, irritation-free purge. Around 1 p.m., the doctor comes back and gives you the green light to eat (still a diet).

You can return to a normal diet gradually, over the next three days, avoiding excesses and overly spicy dishes. The effect of this light treatment is visible immediately after purging. Participants lose between one and seven kilos of toxins, the skin begins to glow, the look is brighter and the mind clearer, with a feeling of rejuvenation and renewed energy.

It should be noted that during the time of the treatment, it is not only the toxins of the body, but also the emotional toxins that will be eliminated. This practice is perfectly safe and you will see that at the end of the Virechana, you will be in great shape, purified and ready to take control of your life. The Virechana cure is supported by the practice of the yoga of synthesis developed by Swami Sivananda.
